This is to catch attention of all the professionals around, regarding their attempts to career advances. I felt the need for writing such an article because:

A resume is normally the first contact point between an employer and a job seeker. It serves the purpose of providing a summary of why a candidate is suitable for a job (cover-letter) and his relevant qualifications/experience.

In this article, advice about creating effective cover letters will be provided and followed by the rest of the resume.

An Effective Cover Letter:

Moving into a new job always involves some degree of uncertainty. You should do your best to find out all you can about a prospective employer, starting right from the pre-interview stage.

Why is it that although most of us know to write we hate doing our own resume? I think it goes back to unhappy writing experiences at school or college. Most of us resented the discipline needed to create good writing. We wanted writing to be like conversation. We didn't like proof reading for errors and editing to gain clarity.

Are you really who you say you are in your resume? Do you honestly possess all the experience or education you say you do? Can you back up the statements with proof from a former employer or school/university you attended quickly if requested? If your job prospects decide to perform a background check what will they discover?

There is no substitute for quantified experience on your resume. Here's what I mean. Supposed you're reading a resume and you see the following statement: "Supervised a team that installed a new customer service tracking system." Okay, that's nice. What does that force the person to do? He has to ask you about that in the interview just to get more basic details, potentially wasting valuable time and costing you the job. Is every job description you read the same? No.

Is every job you submit your resume to the same? Of course they aren’t.

If all these job descriptions are different, why do you submit the same resume?

Not necessarily. And for the same reason resume samples or resume examples may or may not be worth anything (see Free resume examples - Use 'em, but don't).

It's worth looking at effective cover letters created by other people. See if they strike you as being able to reach out and grab a potential employer's attention, enough to compel him to call you. Here are some things to look for:

If you ever studied any probability theory in high school or college, you probably remember the marbles.

Most introductory probability books talk about drawing different colored marbles out of a bag. What's the probability of getting a particular color?

Let's say the bag has 20 marbles, 15 red and 5 blue. The probability of drawing a red one is 15/20, or 3 out of 4. The probability of drawing a blue one is 5/20, or 1 out of four 4.

Doesn't every job search start with Google?

Way back in another lifetime, I was looking for a job after one of my startups failed. Conveniently, everything went to pot in early 2000. I've always had good timing.

Google was the place to start. I knew all I needed were some free resume examples.

There are lots of free resume examples (or free resume samples) on the web.

Try searching for "free resume example" at Google and take a look at the almost 5 million pages that come back (the less restrictive "resume example" gives you 7 million pages, if you've got more time on your hands).

But what good are they?

Plenty, if you DON'T do what most people do with them, which is copy them.

Downloading a free resume template can be so alluring. No work to do! You just download it, fill in the blanks, and get the job of your dreams!

If you buy that, I've got lots of other things I'd like to sell you.

That's a pipe dream. Listen, folks. All you get with a template is a structure that you have to fill in.

Why?

Find a free resume template that will help you create a resume that'll win you a job.

That means several things have to be true about this template you're considering.

Whether you're a Vice President of Marketing or a recent college grad, your resume is the 'key' to opening the doors of employment. It is an employer's first impression of you and believe it or not, many hiring officials spend less than thirty seconds reviewing it. With only fleeting moments to make a first impression, it is imperative that your resume be organized.

During the job hunter's market of the 1990's, employers were settling for less than qualified candidates because the candidate pool was so small. Job hunters were able to name their price and employers were meeting their demands.

The job climate is much different today than it was a few years ago. Job hunters have forgotten how to present themselves to a prospective employer. Their job search skills are poor and they are struggling to find employment.
