Vieira AL, Am ncio Filho A, dos Santos de Oliveira E

The study points out the main characteristics of the nursing labor market in the Brazilian South-East, using Medical-Sanitary Assistance-AMS research data as a reference base, which were recently published by the Brazilian Institute of National Statistics and Geography-IBGE. With 272398 jobs in this region, the nursing team mainly works in the public health system and hospital institutions. In coherence with the Brazilian health system decentralization policies, the municipalization of nursing jobs and signs of labor market flexibility were observed in 1999. In view of this national and regional context, a research should be carried to obtain a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the current labor market for the nursing team.

Low back problems and possible improvements in nursing jobs.

J Adv Nurs. 2006 Jul; 55(1): 79-89
Vieira ER, Kumar S, Coury HJ, Narayan Y

AIM: This paper reports a study that aimed to evaluate the workload, to identify problems leading to the higher incidence rate of work-related low back injury among nurses in the orthopaedic and intensive care unit departments of the hospital, and to gather information about improvements that the nurses would like in the workplace. BACKGROUND: The literature shows that low back injuries are common among nurses, and intervention programmes are needed to address this problem. METHOD: The hospital injury records were examined in a retrospective study. In addition, a validated questionnaire was administered between January and May 2005 to 47 nurses (23 orthopaedic and 24 intensive care nurses). The questionnaire contained questions on workload, history of back injuries, problems, possible solutions and psychophysical measures of exertion. FINDINGS: The life-time incidence and point prevalence of low back pain were 65% and 30%, respectively, in orthopaedic nurses, and 58% and 25%, respectively, in the intensive care nurses. The mean weight handled was reported to be 47 +/- 30 kg by the orthopaedic nurses and 26 +/- 10 kg by the intensive care nurses. The low back scored highest for body-part discomfort - 4.6 and 4.0, respectively, on a 10-point scale. The rate of perceived job exertion was 6.7 +/- 1.8 (very strong), and 5.8 +/- 1.9 (strong) on Borg’s 10-point scale. The total effort required by the job, rated on Visual Analogue Scales, was 67 +/- 14% and 68 +/- 15% of the maximum, respectively. The Borg scores and the total effort according to the Visual Analogue Scale, and the Borg scores and force effort on the Visual Analogue Scale were moderately correlated (r = 0.53, P < 0.01 for both comparisons). CONCLUSION: The methodology proposed here is practical for job evaluation and to design a participatory ergonomic intervention aiming at reducing low back injuries in nursing jobs. There are workload differences between nursing jobs. Lifting devices, biomechanical training, bigger rooms, adequate set-up and additional staff are suggested improvements.

When Bad Interviews Happen to Good Candidates

Going through the motions of a bad interview is like peeling back the layers of an onion. Sally learned this lesson the hard way, hands-on during an interview that should have been a piece of cake. Sally applied for a position that fit her qualifications perfectly. When she received an invitation to interview, Sally believed she was a shoo-in for the job. Feeling confident, she approached the interview in a lax manner. She didn t prepare and prematurely celebrated an offer she was convinced w …

There are Lots of Nursing Jobs, but will an Online School Give You what You Need for a Nursing Career

July 31st, 2006

With the number of nurses curently unable to fill the ongoing surfeit of nursing vacancies in the US, many are considering training to help them win a nursing job. Today’s guest columnist Willie Jones considers the benefits of online nursing schools.

There are approximately 3,000,000 RNs in the United States. That may sound like a lot but in actual fact; there is a shortage of young people going into the nursing profession. There is also the added problem of the older experienced RNs retiring within the next 5 to 7 years. Some hospitals rotate part time nurses as a solution but this may not be workable in the long term.

In the last 20 years there have been so many more opportunities for women in the work place that the nursing profession has suffered. We are in a position now that it is crucial to promote it widely and do what can be done to entice more people to take an interest in the nursing profession.

Fortunately the pay scale for qualified nurses has increased by as much as 12% in the last few years. Certification and geography play a big role in what kind of salary you can get. If you live in the New England or Pacific area, then the salaries are much higher. Also large hospitals with a high bed count typically pay more. And of course certification also makes a huge difference in salary. The range is huge. The average RN earns $40,000 to $58,000 per year. Specialty nurses can earn $65,000 to $80,000 per year depending again on certification and geography.

With the busy lifestyle we lead today, online courses are a great option, especially if you have children and want to further your education in a nursing career. There are several accredited online courses to help you achieve your goal. Your research skills can pay off big time if you do your homework and find the best online solution for you. Online courses now can get you Associate, Bachelor, Master, PhDs and more. There are also online sites that help you with your resume to help place you when you are ready.

If you are thinking about entering the nursing profession chances are you are a caring individual and want to help people. This I think is a wonderful gift you give of yourself and the health profession needs you. The word needs to get out to encourage young people to consider a nursing career for now and future health care.

No nursing jobs for trainee nurses

July 31st, 2006

Trainee nurses who graduate this summer have been told there are no jobs for them at the Royal Bolton Hospital. A group of 41 nursing students have worked for free on the wards of the hospital for the last 18 months. They had been assigned to the hospital as part of their course at Salford Universary and would normally expect to be taken on full time in Bolton at the end of the course.

But at a meeting called by senior figures at the cash-strapped Bolton NHS Trust, the nurses who have cost £1.5 million to train were told there is a nursing recruitment freeze in place, and none of them will be offered work.
